Open Water Diver/Scuba Diver

Open Water Diver

The Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course, and has introduced millions of people all over the world to the great adventure that is diving. If you’ve always wanted to learn how to scuba dive, discover new adventures or simply see the wondrous world beneath the waves, this is where it really begins.

Below is an overview of the course. Please click here for more information on SSI Open Water Diver.

The Open Water Diver qualification is the most widely recognised and respected certification rating in the diving world – it is the diving equivalent of a driving licence!

Over four days (usually completed over two weekends), the course takes you from being a complete novice to a proficient Open Water Diver in three easy steps:

• Step 1: begin your study of diving theory at home in your own time. Then, in our superb on-site facilities at Scubaducks, you will complete knowledge development in the classroom.

• Step 2: you will practice the scuba skills you will need in our heated pool.

• Step 3: the final part of the course moves to an open water site where, under the careful supervision of your Instructor, you will make your open water dives.

The table below shows a typical course timetable:

If you are short of time and feel that the full Open Water Diver course would take too long, or be too challenging, the Scuba Diver certification might just be for you. This comprises only Days 1 and 3 of the Open Water Diver course (see the table above) and gets you diving quickly. However, a Scuba Diver is subject to restictions regarding depth and, significantly, may only dive with a Professional, whereas an Open Water Diver may buddy with another qualified diver. See the FAQs for further details.

If you feel UK diving isn’t for you and you are about to head off on holiday to foreign climes with warm and clear waters, you can do a Referral, where the open water dives (Days 3 and 4 for Open Water Diver and Day 3 only for Scuba Diver) are completed at your resort.

Children aged 10 to 15 years earn the Junior Scuba Diver or Junior Open Water Diver qualification – see the FAQs page for more information.

We will provide all the equipment you will need for the pool sessions and the UK open water dives. You don’t need to be an expert swimmer but you should be comfortable in the water. You should be able to swim 200 m and float or tread water for 10 minutes.
