REMINDER - SETT (Submarine Escape Training Tank) Sat 14th March Gosport
There are a couple of spaces left on this trip for a chance to experience this 30m deep tank with its warm waters (32 deg C).
This facility is a current training facility to train submariners in escaping from a submarine, we have secured use of the facility for pleasure diving for the day by Scubaducks Dive Club.
The plan is to take the van with the gear in and then we can get more in the cars to reduce the travelling costs.
I am awaiting conformation on the opening times etc and will contact all those that want to go in the next day or so with details.

Divemaster Workshops
We have had 2 really good sessions so far and are planning some more in the near future, these take place on a Wednesday evening between 6pm and 9pm Watch this space for more information.

SEASEARCH OBSERVER COURSE
SATURDAY 21ST MARCH 2009 BAPTIST CHURCH, ASTON CLINTON

Seasearch is a project for volunteer sports divers who have an interest in what they're seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment around the coasts of Britain and Ireland..
The main aim is to map out the various types of sea bed found in the near-shore zone around the whole of the Britain and Ireland. In addition they are recording what lives in each area, establishing the richest sites for marine life, the sites where there are problems and the sites which need protection.
This is a one-day course aimed at giving divers new to the project and new to marine recording a basic grounding. At the end of the course you should be able to complete the Seasearch Observation Form and take part in Seasearch Dives either on your own, with your club or on dives organised by Seasearch Partners.
During the course you'll learn about Seasearch - its aims, history and achievements, a basic introduction to the variety of marine life in British and Irish waters, recognising and classifying marine habitats, position fixing, and how to fill in the Observation Form. The day concludes with a 'video dive' and an opportunity to fill in a form without even getting wet!
During the course you'll get a Seasearch Qualification booklet and once you have completed 5 practical dives (two with a tutor present) you can get signed up as a Seasearch Observer.
£40 per person (including splash proof course pack)
Open to all diving grades

Capernwray and The Rez Date Change
I have changed the date of the Capernwray and The Res visit as it fell in the middle of the Easter weekend and this meant a few could not go.
The main reason however though is that when I tried to book accomodation they would only let us book 2 nights because its the Easter weekend.

So its the same plans but 17th / 18th April instead. Interested? Sign up and register on The Forum

NEMO 33 - Belgium - Inland tank to dive in

I have done some research and found the following out so far

I have changed the date from 14th Feb - as apparently there are some of you that need to have that day free for romantic reasons.......

Choices Choices Choices.........

I have contacted Eurostar for group booking prices for 10+ and await their reply, but in the meantime here is what I have found out so far.

Eurostar (based on 5+ of us)
7th Nov - Depart St Pancras 08.25 arrive Brussels 11.50
8th Nov - Depart Brussels 17.59 arrive St Pancras 19.20
Standard Class (no frills) £99.00 each return
Leisure Class (more room & 3 course meal and bar) £149.00 each return
Accommodation
Rooms from £49 per room so approx £25 each if you want to share.
or
Eurostar Weekend Break (2 nights, 2 per room, including return Eurostar)
6th Nov - Depart 17.45 Arrive 21.10
8th Nov - Depart 14.53 Arrive 16.01
Accommodation
4* Radisson Hotel (not inc breakfast) £209 per person.
3* Comfort Hotel Art Siru (inc breakfast) £205 per person.

To and from Aylesbury
Chiltern Railways do a group booking return to St P for approx £9 return

Nemo 33 Rates
It is in French but would appear to be €22 per dive
You have to be PADI OW or above to dive there. As there will be a couple of instructors going I think this level will be sufficient - just remember if you are OW qualified your depth limit is 18m!

You must have your own computer (or hire one there €5 per dive)

We need to get at least 10 of us to make this a worthwhile trip.

Please register your interest via the forum

Capernwray & The Rez- 11th & 12th April
We have organised a weekend "up north" with Capernwray on the Saturday and The Rez on the way back on the Sunday.
Andy Wilkinson our course director is local to Capernwray and has offered some DM's to help with Capernwray orientation.

Capernwray is one of the best inland dive sites in the UK, situated in Lancashire just off M6 J35 is has many interesting things to see underwater.

The plan is to make an early start on Sat 14th March, I will take the van so we can load kit into there and get more people into cars to cut down on some cost and our carbon footprint!

We then dive at Capernwray where Andy Wilkinson our Course Director will be on hand with some DM's to help with orientation (thanks Andy).

All qualified divers are welcome, we have to pay a membership fee of £15 and then £12 for the days diving.

The plan will be to stay locally that night (see below) and set off south in the morning to The Rez

The Rez is situated near Stoke on Trent and is an underground reservoir that is 2m deep wit a 2' airspace above the water - so a complete lights out experience!

There is a minimum qualification of OW but all dives MUST be done in a dry suit and the diver MUST have 5 logged openwater dives in a drysuit.

To get more info you can visit the sites web pages
Capernwray - www.dive-site.co.uk
The Rez - www.therezuk.net

Accomodation
Premier Inn - £56.00 per twin room
Capernwray Country House - £35 per person www.capernwrayhouse.com.

So looks to be an interesting weekend - please register your interest on the Forum

Diving Holiday Red Sea / Malta - June 09
OK so there were no takers for the Live aboard at the end of Feb and I am not going out there "billy no mates"!

So how about a week away in June?

What are peoples preferences?

Egypt? Malta? Further afield? Liveaboard? Hotel? Reefs? Wrecks?

Lets see how many are interested by the end of February - get a consensus and then grab ourselves a bargain holiday!

So who is up for that - register at the Forum

SETT Submarine escape training tank - Saturday 14th March 09

This is a military establishment in Portsmouth used for training Navy personnel how to escape from a submarine.

In general it is not open to the public very often but we have managed to book it exclusively for our own use on 14th March.

The cost is £460 for the day and maximum numbers allowed to dive are 16 so this makes it approx £30 a head for the day if we can get the full 16 people.

I cant emphasize enough how this is an experience that you wont be able to get just at anytime.

The tank is 32m deep and 5m in diameter and all at a toastie 32deg C

Located at HMS Excellent, Whale Island, Portsmouth.

For more information look at
www.royalnavy.mod.uk/server/show/nav.3097

Now we have to confirm this soon so the deadline for confirming a place on this is 1st Feb - we will need a non refundable deposit as well.

So who is going? First come first served - register on the Forum

Christmas Party
Tickets are selling well, there is still time to get yours the last day for
purchase will be Sunday 30th, they are available from DiverCity in Aylesbury
at a modest cost of £10 each to include the buffet and your first drink!
Remember its Saturday 6th December at the Hop Pole and there is a live band
on as well!
All friends and family welcome - under 21's can come along but are only
allowed in the function room - not in the main bar area.
If you cant get to the shop contact me to reserve your ticket and I will put
them to one side for you.

There is something in the AIR......
YES! The rumour is true, Divercity in Aylesbury has the compressor working
at long last, Nic is out the back of the shop with a cheesy grin stroking it
lovingly, and Sue says she will so miss the daily drive to Bletchley to fill
cylinders as she just loved the drive over there ...... NOT!
Seriously though folks - its all up and running all your air fills can be
met from the Aylesbury store now!

Newsletter
Humble appologies to those of you who have taken so much time to put the
articles together - with the last couple of weeks being pretty full on I
havent had the chance to compile the November newsletter - it will be done
over the next week or so and will be a bumper edition to cover Nov / Dec.
If you have anything you want to add please get it to me ASAP.

Appologies from Divercity
Nic and Sue appologise for the store being closed last Sunday, and hope it
didnt inconvenience anyone too much, Sue was covering the Bletchley Store
and Nic was supporting Paddy during his IE.
Normal service is now resumed!

New PADI Speciality Course
There is a new PADI speciality course that counts as one of the 5
specialities towards your Master Scuba Diver rating - PADI O2 Provider
Speciality.
This is a great little course and really essential for any existing or
aspiring Rescue divers or above.
It goes into detial on how to provide O2 in an emergency situation, you have
all seen the equipment, but how confident would you be to use it properly?
The good news is that this is a non diving course and only takes about 3
hours so can be done in an evening or weekend easily. Cost £75
We will be running one in December, watch this space for details, or
register your interest with Nic or Sue.

The Blue Lagoon - Milton Keynes
I dived this while on my IDC, it is located right behind the Divercity store
in Bletchley.
Run by a BSAC club it is open on Sundays from 10.30 till 13.30, doesnt get
busy and the diving was OK when I went in, viz not brilliant but bearable!
Cost - £3
We have to notify them in advance so will be organising a trip there soon -
watch this space.

Dry Diving

This is a good opportunity to test out your body in a controlled environment - and its a logged dive, email me to register your interest.

New to Diving?
Want to get more experience and put your new skills into action? Want to experience sea diving in the UK?
We are looking at arranging a series of dives aimed at the new to diving members and those that want to extend their experiences to sea diving in the UK.
There are a number of experienced divers in the club and we are aiming to buddy up with some of you new to diving guys and gals to expand your experiences.
If you are interested please register your interest and we will get some diving fixed up.
Initial thoughts are either 16th or 17th of August and maybe 30th August. Either a couple of dives at Stoney Cove, Vobster Quay, Swannage Pier or Chesil Beach.
To register your interest please email us with your interest - we also want more experienced divers to come forward to share these trips, go on dont be shy!

New Members
Well we have had 9 new members over the last couple of weeks, thanks guys and girls for making the effort to join up and welcome to your club.
Please feel free to contribute, in fact please please I beg you to contribute! We need input from members to keep the club going.
What can you do?
- Well a piccy or 2 when you have been diving and a little write up about your dive experience at a particular site.
- How about your member profile and a piccy of you? It can get posted up in the rouges gallery - at least we will then recognise you at the bar in the Hop Pole on a Thursday!
- Training or Kit review, had a good or bad experience with a diving related service or product? Tell us about it!
- Dived somewhere exotic (sorry Divercity pool & Stoney Cove doesnt count!) send us some piccys and a write up and it will be posted, this give good first hand ratings to club members!

Partner not a diver?
Watch this space, coming next month is a fantastic offer from Diver City to get more people diving!
This will give a great discount to anyone that a club member gets to come along for a Discover Scuba Diving course, and we all know that once tried it can be very addictive........
The exact details of the offer will be mailed out to members at the beginning of next month and will be open to anyone (over 12) that you want to get into this fantastic and fun sport.

Christmas Party
I know its July! But the club has doubled in size since January! 41 members as of today, so even if only 50% of those turn out with or without partners, you can see we need to get somewhere booked.
I know that the Hop Pole has a function room......
This is open for discussion and all ideas welcome, dont be shy!

Forum
Hmm this doesnt work as it should, I have taken it down for now and will look into a message board style board if it is possible, watch this space!

Poseidon Day
Well the Poseidon Open Day was a success with many people coming in to try out some of this great gear, one of the more suprising things was the range of fins to try, including those that looked like pink rabbit ears but had some tremendous thrust!

Poseidon are planning to come back and do a rebreather day, after the summer holiday season, and this will give you the opportunity to be able to come along and try this out under the expert guidance of a Poseidon rebreather instructor. Places will be limited so please register your interest in this event by emailing Diver City or letting Nic or Sue know.

Dive-Logs.com
Dive logs are a web based company specialising in, yes you guessed it, dive logs! You can buy standard log refills or create your own on line enabling you to include or exclude parts of the log that you do or dont require!

I have also uploaded the Scubaducks logon (well the duck head anyway) to thier site as they manufacture log book stamps, you can now get a log book stamp with the club logo on it. To do this follow the instructions and select the option to use your own logo and then in the special instructions put the reference "Paddy Duck" to identify the logo. They work really well, see mine below.

Dive-Logs!Dive Logs Link - click here to raise club funds!

In addition to this we as a club have an affiliate programme with them which means that if you go to thier site by using the links from our site the club gets 10% of whatever you spend! However you must go through this site using the link for us to benefit from this! Please use the link above or from the links page!

Dry Diving - in the pot!
I recently had my HSE Medical carried out at The London Diving Chamber, and while there i picked up some info regarding thier Dry Diving experience. This give a small group (min 6, max 10) the opportunity to go in the chamber and dry dive down to 50m while being monitored medically by the professional staff.
This gives you the experience of finding your nitrogen nacosis level while in controlled conditions.
You can take your computer and they will sign your log book as well for you.
The cost is £30 per person and we can get a train from Aylesbury to Marylebone for a special group rate at £10 return. They do this each Thursday evening, we would need to be there by 18.30 and are finished early enough to grab a pie and a pint afterwards before returning.
I plan to organise this in the latter part of September
Anyone interested, please register your interest by emailing me.

Poseidon Open Day
Diver City Aylesbury have a Poseidon open day on Saturday 19th July.
This is your opportunity to come along and try some of the latest gear from one of the most respected manufacturers of diving equipment.
There will be a range of things to try out from across the spectrum of items that they make so please feel free to drop in and join in.
If you are coming and can advise Nic or Sue in advance that you will be there they can convey a rough idea on numbers to Poseidon so that they bring enough gear with them, if however you decide to drop in at last minute then this is of course no problem, pre booking is not required!

Pembroke Diving Weekend
Duncan Ward from the Diver City Bletchley Dive Club - Shoal, is organising a dive trip to Pembrokeshire 3rd - 5th October, please see the invitation below, having spent a weekend with these guys at Stoney last weekend this has all the hallmarks of being a great event.

Dear Shoal and ScubaDuck Member
Why not join us for a joint tour to Pembrokeshire in October? The plan so far is to travel to Wales on Friday 3rd of October stopping in the Milford Haven area. Check out this local dive centre website that has some good information on the area http://www.dive-pembrokeshire.com. I will try to arrange some various accomodation to accomodate those travelling with partners/families, please let me know if you have a preference or if you are planning to bring significant others, some i already know. I am hoping to book a days boat diving (2/3 dives) for the Saturday and shore dives for the Sunday so people can leave as and when they need to.
Please let me know directly (dward@nildram.co.uk ) if you would like to come, i need to know by Sunday 6th of July please so i can start to finalise bookings.

Thanks and i look forward to seeing you in Wales !!

Duncan

9 June 2008

Well the diving season is well underway, new members are signing up regularly now with one new member from The Netherlands, well he does have connections in the Aylesbury area.

Deposits
There have been a few no shows for some of the recent dive trips with the no shows not even letting the organiser know they were not coming, now this is not really acceptable as boats are booked in advance and that just costs the remaining participants a lot more money.
In to secure your place on an organised dive trip where we have to book a boat or incur a non refundable cost the trip will have to be paid for in full at the time of booking to secure your place, if you then cancel and the place is not subsequently filled you will loose your payment.
I just want to remind everyone that this is a not for profit organisation and not a business so we cannot carry these extra costs. Thank you for your understanding.

Outstanding Reports
I know that the Karting happened a couple of weeks ago and that a group have just returned from Sharm as well as the recent trip to Plymouth.
I havent had any reports from these trips, if the organisers could give me some details and a few pictures I will get the details posted up and something in the July newsletter, it is appreciated.

Kevin Anderson - in Turkey
Kevin is well and has moved into his house in Turkey, he reports that he is getting on well with his Divemaster Internship and that the diving out there is both very good and reasonably priced.
He is getting some prices on the diving and accommodation and the flights are cheap anyway, so if you fancy Turkey........
Below are some recent pictures of his new house.

Diver City (Aylesbury) Ltd opens Wednesday 2nd April

The opening date for Diver City in the old Scubanet premisis in Rabans Lane is Wednesday 2nd April at 10am!

All club members are invited down to the shop on Thursday April 3rd evening before 7.30pm to meet the team.

There will be late night opening on a Thursday until 7.30pm followed by club night at the Hop Pole.

Opening hours to start off with will be
Wednesday 10.00am - 6.00pm
Thursday 10.00am - 7.30pm
Friday 10.00am - 6.00pm
Saturday 10.00am - 6.00pm
Sunday 10.00am - 6.00pm
Monday - Closed
Tuesday - Closed

For the first couple of weeks the air fills will be done over at Bletchley while they get the compressor serviced but they will transport and return the cylinders from Aylesbury. So to start air fills will take a couple of days and Nitrox will need 4 or 5 days.

Air and Nitrox pricing will be as follows
Air 232 bar any size cylinder - £2.00
Air 300 bar any size cylinder - £3.00
Nitrox will be charged the same as above plus the O2 used, this will mean that you only pay for what you need, thus if you have a fill of 32% in a cylinder that had 36% in it before it will cost you less!

If you need a fill before the opening date Nic says you are welcome to drop in your cylinders and he will get them filled for you, however call before visiting to make sure he is there 01296 317787.

Bookings are now being taken for courses so if there is anything you are interested in please get in touch with them.

The pool is being filled (half way there at the moment!

Calling all Dive Masters and Instructors, Nic would welcome all who are interested in helping out to get in touch with him at the store.

All in all it looks very similar inside, even the stock is the same! The addition of a new larger counter and a move around of the displays gives it a fresh look.

Any one for the Isle of Man?
I have someone I know in the Isle of Man, a retired commercial diver that knows the dives in IOM like the back of his hand, he has offered to guide us on dives if we want to visit.

I am thinking of running a trip over there for a long weekend in mid June and just want to see if anyone is up for the trip? Say leave Thurs AM get the fast ferry at 2pm arrive 4.30pm Dive Friday Saturday and Sunday AM catch the 3pm ferry Sunday and home by say 10pm or come back Monday.

I have looked into the ferry crossing and it is approx £180.00, I have a Galaxy that would take 5 and their dive gear, add fuel, say £80.00 and hotel 3 nights in 3* £35 a night per person makes approx £160.00 per person plus local air fills.

If anyone is interested please let me know and I will see what I can get organised. Email me at club@scubaducks.co.uk

Paddy

The chat room has been taken down as it really was very very clunky, I think the forum page can be used better for this.
